Branigan had been admitted to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City by the mid-1970s, and by the end of the decade she had auditioned to be a supporting vocalist for Leonard Cohen. She didn't contemplate pursuing a musical career until her final year of high school, when she landed the lead part in a school musical. She continued to work in theater and film, and to record with other artists, until her death due to a brain aneurysm in 2004.īranigan was born in the upstate New York hamlet of Brewster in 1952. Branigan placed five singles in the upper reaches of the Hot 100, six albums in the Top 200, and two-dozen songs split between the dance music and adult contemporary charts. Her influence was so strong that two of her songs were chosen for the soundtracks of two of the decade's most memorable films, Flashdance and Ghostbusters. Her chart triumphs were similar to those of other female celebrities from the 1980s, such as Sade, Kim Wilde, and Kim Carnes. Branigan was a singles artist whose career trajectory corresponded with the rise of the MTV era, from her clear-throated, fist-pumping post-disco hits like "Gloria" to the sensuous, Roland 808 vamps and drum machine loops in "Self Control" and beyond. Her cinematic, synth-driven, club-friendly dance pop and ground-breaking music videos catapulted her singles and albums to the top of the charts and made her a massive concert draw. Laura Branigan was a Grammy-nominated actress and pop singer/songwriter.
